Listening Task

Title:
Rebuilding Communities: Local Economic Development

Source:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyO8chVK_44

Summary:
This listening is an interview of Michael Shuman. He explains two things about rebuilding communities. First, he says that people spending money affects local business. That is because when people spend money, the government gets more tax. He mentions the government should spend money more wisely. Then, he give one example. When thousands of people in San Francisco lost their jobs, the government could have prevented that situation by spending more money on producing jobs . If they had done it, the local economy would have been better.
Second, he explains the idea of local business "multiplier." That means that dollars will circulate. When people get money from their company, they spend money in other places such as grocery stores. He thinks that when people spend more money, the circulating dollar is faster than before. It affects local businesses.

Opinion:
This listening mentions how the local government can grow their business. When I listened to this topic, I could not understand the whole thing. Thus, I had to listen many times. Michael Shuman said two things. The most interesting part was the part about money circulation. I heard that before when I was in the high school. However, I just learned its definition without any examples. When I heard the San Francisco example, I could understand more clearly than before. It was a very good time for me to know about local business management.

What is happiness

I think the definition of happiness is self-satisfaction. It means that happiness depends on people's minds. For example, although blue-collar workers cannot earn money well, they can satisfy themselves, because they think the wages are enough for them. They do not place importance on their money; they can find happiness in their families. However, even a rich person cannot feel satisfaction. They always get stress from work. Whenever they meet other companies' CEO, they have to prepare themselves. It shows that happiness is not related to wealth.
In fact, happiness can be found in small and simple things . In my case, I feel satisfied when I finish my homework and tests. Also, doing something that I want to do is very satisfying. I can find happiness in the things I do every day. Therefore, when everyone thinks positively, they can get happiness.

Title:
Michael Nutter Announces Economic Development Plan

Source:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5620434917253608285

Summary:
This speech talks about the economic development plan for Philadelphia. Michael Nutter, who wants to be a mayor, suggests some different plans.
To begin with, he wants to create an office of business to get rid of the economic obstacles. Thus, these are very good opportunities for all kinds of businesses. These chances lead to an increase in the number of employees, both men and women.
In addition, he wants to provide work programs to those who want to be a worker. After making the work program, many people can get these opportunities. Also, to reduce the people's burden, the government will make a tuition program for trainees. It will help poor people to learn job programs.
Finally, he mentions encouraging colleges and universities in Philadelphia. That is because, he believes that after people graduate from them, they can get more opportunities to get a job. After then, it will bring Philadelphia's economic development.

Opinion:
This listening task mentions economic development plan for Philadelphia. However, he just focuses on the increase of job opportunities. Thus, he suggests many policies only for jobs. I think his policies are good, but the cost would be expensive. That money comes from Philadelphian citizens. It means that the tax would be increased or budget would be cut from other sides. Therefore, I think that candidate has to consider many things, not just job opportunities.

2005 International Conference on Global Entrepreneurship:
Economic Development for Asia and the US

Source:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1617219875487865778&q=economic+develop

Summary:
These days, many people in the world are entrepreneurs. Even though in poor countries, 15% of populations are entrepreneur. That is because most of people are working in their own farm. Also, in the developed countries, people started their business in the young age. That is because they lose their jobs, opportunities, and some of the reasons. Thus, people have to learn about entrepreneurship.
The percentages of working entrepreneurship are very different in all over the world. However, according to the statistics, high income countries have higher entrepreneurship, and low income countries have lower entrepreneurship.
For example, in the poor countries, people are hard to find their job even though they have a goal. Their labor markets suggest some conditions (School degrees). However, many people can’t learn, so they can't find the job. That means they always face discrimination, stress, and challenges.

Opinion:
This listening task is part of speech by one person on the "International Conference" . It says the importance of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is important for everyone. That is why most people want to be top of their business.
I can't figure out all parts of entrepreneurship, but I know that the entrepreneurship is more and more important these days. This task helps me to know that getting a good entrepreneurship is important.

Listening Task (Steve Jobs's Speech)

Summarize the Listening & Opinion

Steve Jobs suggests three important things. To begin with, he mentions connecting the dots. When he was young, he was adopted. When he went to the college, parents supported his tuition, even though it was hard for his parents to afford to pay that money. However, he dropped out of that college. That is because he didn't want to study that. After then, he found his own way which he loved. Then, he succeeded in his own field. This story shows the importance of looking forward and following your heart. Everything is connected from now to the future.

In addition, he also explains love and loss. When he was 30 years old, he was fired by his company although he had founded that company. That is because the vision of his management was not good. After that situation, he was very disappointed. However, he started to manage other companies. That is because he loved his job so much. Then, he met his wife, and also he could come back as Apple Company’s CEO. This story shows that life sometimes brings hardships, but you should not lose your faith, and keep going. “Do believe what you do. Keep looking and don’t settle.”

Finally, he talks about death. He said that he always looks in the mirror when he wakes up. Then, he thinks about what he wants to do. That is because he noticed that life's precious when he faced his death. Therefore, he suggested that students have to recognize what is important. "Don't limit the time, and don't trap other people." Instead of this, you have to follow what you want to do. Follow your heart and keep going. "Stay hungry, stay foolish."

After listening to the speech, I think that all people have problem in their life, even though some people are very famous. However, since they control their problems well, they can succeed in their life.

Therefore, I decided that I would never give up what I want to do and always try to achieve my goals. Then, one day I will be success in my life.

Listening Task (Economic Development for Poor Countries)

Source:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XQAI2Ejc4U

Summary:
This discussion talks about economic development for poor countries. There are two men who have different opinions. These days, the gap between developing countries and developed countries are terrible. There are many poor countries in the world, such as the Africa Continent. In those countries, they could not develop well because of lack of development sources, shortage of basic institutions, and bad policies. Therefore, the one guy suggests that developed countries reduced their restriction toward poor countries and trade them. Also, they help to poor people to get property and democracy right.
However, other guy insists that the developed countries’ economic aids are quite good. Therefore, developing countries have to develop their own. They make their environmental situation different from now. After then, they can develop such as China.

Opinion:
My research topic is economic development of Korea. Thus, I want to know another countries’ economic situation, especially developing countries. These days, the developed countries are more and more developing. Therefore, the gap between the poor and the rich countries cannot be changed.
In this discussion, they suggest many kinds of things about developing countries. However, I think that the most important aids are food, shelter, and medical treatment. Many people have been died because of these things. After then, they give the countries to just little aid about their development. I think it is the best way to help other poor countries.
